The Jefferson Memorial is located south of the
National Mall, on the bank of the Potomac River. It was built between 1939 and
1943 after the plans of John Russell Pope, on the initiative of President
Franklin D. Roosevelt. The building follows classic Roman patterns, and
slightly resembles public buildings designed by Jefferson himself. The 5.8 m tall bronze statue inside the Memorial is the work of
Rudulph Evans. The inside walls are decorated with passages from Jefferson’s
writings, the most prominent is from a letter written in 1800: „I have sworn
upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the
mind of man.”
