Canterbury is the centre of the Anglican Church. Became a site for pilgrimage after the murder of Thomas Becket (Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 to 1170) at the order of Henry II (1170). The topic of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales relates such a pilgrimage to Becket's shrine... which was destroyed when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries in England (1538). It is a World Heritage Site
