Edward the Confessor was the one who established the abbey

- It was added to under various kings

- The West Towers (shown here) were finished in the 18th c

- The North Entrance is from Victoria's time (next picture)

- The abbey is the burial place of many kings and queens and other famous people:

Edward the Confessor (famous pilgrimage site in the middle ages),

Henry VII and his wife Elizabeth of York (the 2 royal houses united with their wedding),

Mary I and her half-sister Elizabeth I (in the same tomb!),

Mary Queen of Scots,

An unknown British soldier from the French battlefields (WWI)

His grave is surrounded by red poppies - the symbol of the soldiers who died in the world wars

- Poppies are worn by many people on Remembrance Sunday
