It was probably built for sun worship by pre-Celtic people but was taken over and used by the Celtic Druids ~6th c. BC. On Midsummer's Day the Hill Stone (a few metres from the outer circle on the ceremonial road) casts a long shadow through the centre. The stones originate from Wales. It is a mystery how they were brought so far.
