Established by the Romans (1st c. AD) who probably learned about the existence of hot springs here from the Celts. The Romans built separate baths here for high ranking officials, lower ranking officials, women, etc.

Bottom right: The Great Bath, Open-air swimming pool (46 °C). This was the biggest pool and the most elegant one here. It was discovered much later (1870s) than the smaller ones within the building. The terrace was added in the 19th c. with statues of great Roman statesmen.
