Top right: The Royal Liver Building with the 2 Liver Birds on the clock towers, is one of the earliest examples of multi-storey reinforced concrete construction. The clock faces are larger than the clock face of Big Ben. In fact, they are the largest clock dials in Britain. Liverpool became an important industrial centre during the Industrial Revolution. The city was famous for its cotton mills and exporting cotton goods. It was also one of the biggest slave trading centres in the British Empire when slave trading became illegal in England in 1807 (slavery was abolished in the British Empire in1833). Slaves were traded for British cloth and iron products in West Africa then they were sold in the West Indies for sugar which was a great luxury in the 18th and early 19th c.
