Used to be the border between Caledonia (Scotland) and (Britannia) England. It was ordered by the Roman Emperor Hadrianus in 120 AD. The Roman Wall used to be 5m high!!!, 117 km long (Carlisle - Newcastle). Troops were stationed in forts every 8 km along the way. When the Roman legions left (late 4th, early 5th c) the natives of the area (Celts) started to tear down the wall and use it as building material. Much of the wall was used to create stone fences for keeping sheep from wandering away in the 18th c.
