Twice a day the North Sea tide rises so high that it cuts off Holy Island from the mainland. Lindisfarne was famous for its Celtic Christian monastery (7th c.) established by Irish missionaries. This is where the beautiful Lindisfarne Gospels were produced (725) (British Museum). Lindisfarne was the 1st target of the Viking raids in Britain (793). The Vikings returned repeatedly until the monks decided to abandon it definitively (875).
