York Minster is the largest Gothic church in Britain (among the largest in the world - much larger than Westminster Abbey or Canterbury Cathedral)

It was built in the 13-15th c. This medieval cathedral is most famous for its large number of beautiful stained glass windows. The choir screen is a miniature "Heroes' Square" with statues of kings from William the Conqueror to Henry VI. It has the world's largest stained glass window (middle). It is the size of a tennis court!

Right: Statue of Constantine the Great. York (Eboracum) was the capital of the northern province during Roman occupation. Constantine was proclaimed Roman emperor while stationed in York (306). Vikings settled here (Jorvik) and turned the town into a booming trading centre and the Viking capital of the Danelaw (the area under Danish control: 9-11th c). There are still several streets with Danish names in York today.
