Lincoln used to be the fourth city of England in importance (11th c) owing to its wool exports. The profits from wool paid for the construction of this Gothic 3 spire cathedral (11-14th c.), that is highly regarded by architectural scholars. The central tower rises to 83 m. There used to be a lead-encased wooden spire that rose 160 m, but that collapsed in 1549 due to weather; it was the first building to ever exceed the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza, thereby becoming the world's tallest structure, and remaining that for more than two centuries, until the collapse of the spire.
