It was founded by St Columba in 546 as a monastic settlement. In 1613 companies in London received permission from the English king to settle in the area, the town was renamed Londonderry. The enmity between the Catholic natives and the Anglican settlers in Northern Ireland dates back to this time. The entire old town is surrounded by walls (8-9 m high).
