The city's population grew fast in the 19th c, being the only city in Ireland with industries: shipbuilding, linen production, tobacco industry. From the profits the city could afford imposing building projects such as the City Hall (1908). In front of the main entrance is Queen Victoria's statue. By the eastern tower is the statue of Edward Harland - the founder of the Harland and Wolf Ship factory where Titanic was built (1912).
