Established in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I with the objective to stop students from Ireland from going to study to the Continent and getting revolutionary ideas. Only Protestants could study here! Even after the Independence of Ireland was achieved Catholic students had to get special permission to attend... until 1970! Trinity College is Ireland's most distinguished university. It is also among the top 10 tourist attractions of Dublin
with its Old Library and the exhibition on the Book of Kells. The main square is dominated by the bell tower, called Campanille. Some of the world famous graduates of Trinity: Jonathan Swift, Samuel Beckett, Oscar Wilde, Edmund Burke, George Berkley (Berkley Univ. California is named after him).
