Situated in the Southern Uplands of Scotland. Being on the "Borders", Hermitage has seen many border skirmishes (14-15th c.). Mary Queen of Scots rode 90 km (in one day) to this castle when she heard that her lover (Bothwell) lay wounded here (1566). This was Sir Walter Scott's favourite castle of all the Scottish castles. (He had his portrait painted with Hermitage Castle in the background.)
