Robert Burns, Scotland's favourite 18th c poet was born here (1759-96). He figures on the 5 Pound notes (issued by Scottish banks). Burns Night is a national holiday celebrated every year on his birthday: 25 January, with whiskey, haggis, and singing his poems. Burns loved to write in the Scottish dialect on themes of love, patriotism, the superstitions of the country folk, criticizing corruption, etc.
Alloway is a village and suburb of Ayr (bottom). It is best known as the birthplace of Robert Burns.
