Sir William Burrell (Glaswegian shipping merchant and philanthropist ) gave (in 1944, with £250,000 to house it) his vast collection of art objects from around the world to the city of Glasgow (eg. 1st c. Roman vase, Rembrandt's self-portrait, tapestries, stained glass, etc)
