Built in the 12th c. it changed hands several times during the Wars of Independence (late 13-15th c.) between the English and the Scottish. It witnessed battles between Scottish Highlanders and Lowlanders as well! (When the Lowlands tried to centralize power.) Urquhart castle was blown up by the English after the first Jacobite uprising: in 1689 Highlanders tried to bring James II back on the throne in place of his Protestant daughter and son-in-law (W. of Orange).
