Monument to Bonnie Prince Charlie who led the Scottish Highlanders in battles against England in the 3rd Jacobite Uprising (1745-6). Their aim was to put B.P. Charlie Stuart back on the throne instead of George II of Hanover. They were very successful in the beginning, despite the fact that the Scots from the Lowlands (Edinburgh, Glasgow) refused to join him. They broke into England and captured several towns and marched on towards London when, due to a lack of funds and munitions, they had to return home (great relief for the English). They were finally defeated at Culloden (outside of Inverness) in 1746. Awful measures were introduced to castigate the Highlanders...!
