The Empire State Building stands
at 5th Avenue and West 33rd Street, in midtown Manhattan, therefore it offers
excellent views on the island and its surroundings from its observation desk on
the 86th floor. In this picture, we are looking straight south towards downtown
Manhattan and New York Harbor. In center right, the uniquely shaped Flatiron
Building can be seen on the corner of Broadway (to the left) and Fifth Avenue
(to the right). The picture also reveals how Broadway breaks the gridiron
pattern of Manhattan streets as in crosses the island northwestward, cutting
across streets (east-west direction) and avenues (north-south direction).
