In this picture, we are looking southeast from the Empire State Building towards Brooklyn. Manhattan and Brooklyn are separated by the East River, which is actually connecting Upper New York Bay on its south end to Long Island Sound on its north end. There are a total of 13 tunnels running under the river; two of them carry automobile traffic, while the rest carries subway traffic.
