In this picture, the
southwestern part of Central Park, the so-called Sheep Meadow, can be seen. The
Park covers 3.4 km2 in uptown Manhattan in
a rectangular area between Eighth Avenue on the west, Fifth Avenue on the East,
West 110th Street on the north, and West 59th Street on the south. Construction
of the Park began in 1857, but it was not completed until 1873. The landscape
of the Park is entirely articificial, even the soil was brought in from New
Jersey. The Park was neglected until the 1930s, when it was renewed for
recreational purposes. In the 1960s and 70s the Park had a dangerous reputation,
especially after dark, because many violent crimes were committed there. During
the 1990s, mayor Rudy Giuliani cracked down on crime in New York, and as a
result, Central Park is considered nowadays an entirely safe place to visit and
enjoy.
