Columbia University (founded 1754) is one of the oldest universities in the US. It is a private university, and a member of the Ivy League. The main campus is located in uptown Manhattan, along Broadway between the 110th and 122th Street, just south of Harlem. Columbia has traditionally been strong in humanities, engineering, and architecture, and its law and medical schools are particularly famous. In 1912, Hungarian-born newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer left a huge sum of money to the university for the purpose of a graduate school of journalism – it is the oldest and one of best such schools in the US. Columbia also administers the Pulitzer Prize since 1917, the most prestigious award for journalists and writers in the US.
