The New York Public Library is among the largest library collections in the US. It was created in 1895 from the unification of two earlier libraries, and the main building – located on 5th Avenue between 40th and 42 Streets – opened in 1911. It houses the Humanities and Social Sciences Library today. The system includes three other research libraries and 80 branch libraries. Although the Library was created by wealthy benefactors, today it is maintained by the City of New York.
