St. Patrick’s Cathedral is
located along 5th Avenue at 50th Street. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic
archbishop of New York, built between 1858–1879 in Gothic style to replace the
Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral, which was small and badly damaged by fire. Since
the great majority of New York’s Catholics in the mid-19th century were Irish
immigrants, it is small wonder that the cathedral was dedicated to the patron
saint of Ireland, St. Patrick. Today, New York’s Catholic population is far
more mixed, including many descendants of Italians, Poles, Hispanics, and even
Hungarians.
