The headquarters of the
United Nations is located in midtown Manhattan, overlooking the East River. The
tall tower in the picture is the Secretariat Building; the General Assembly
meets in the low building next to it. The complex was built in 1949–1950.
Although technically in New York City, the site of the UN headquarters has
extraterritorial status like embassies do, and it is symbolically owned by all
the member states.
