Elvis Presley is beyond doubt the most famous person to be associated with Memphis all over the world. Although he was born in a small town in Mississippi, the family moved to Memphis in 1948 when Elvis was 13, so he grew up here in a poor neighborhood, strongly influenced by the local blues and gospel tradition. He made his first recordings at local Sun Studios in 1954, and within three years he became a national star. From the late 1950s to his death in 1977, he lived in a large mansion in Memphis called Graceland, where he as buried too. Graceland was turned into a museum in 1982, and it has remained a sacred place for millions of Elvis fans ever since.
