Dallas is one of the largest cities in Texas, and one of the richest cities in the US. The town was founded in 1856, becoming important after 1873 as a major railroad junction. But the city's wealth is derived largely from the oil industry: in 1930, oil was found about 100 miles east of the city, and Dallas became the financial center of the industry. From the 1960s, the city successfully switched from oil to computer technology. Its downtown is one of the most modern in the US, built mostly in the 1970s and 1980s. Outside the US, the city's name was made famous by the successful television series in the 1980s.
