Midwestern homes are predominantly made of wood (sometimes covered by one layer of brick from the outside), and typically consist of two floors, where downstairs are the 'public rooms' (living room, dining room, kitchen, perhaps a guest room) and upstairs are the 'private rooms' (bedrooms and bathrooms). The garage is usually connected to the house, so residents can walk straight into the living room from the garage. In the US, guests are not shown around in the house (a common habit in Hungary when somebody visits a house or an apartment for the first time), and they rarely get a glimpse of the upstairs bedrooms, which are considered 'off-limits' to strangers.
