The Painted Desert is a large area in northern Arizona east of the Grand Canyon, mostly on the territory of the Navajo Indian Reservation.  The area received its name after the unusual natural colors of the eroded rocks and sand dunes, which are rich in clay and various minerals. This type of geological terrain is called badlands by scientists.
