Petrified Forest National Park is located in northeastern Arizona, within the Painted Desert area.  Its unique feature is the giant ancient tree trunks scattered in the area, preserved in a petrified form. Despite their similarity of real tree trunks, these trees are about 200 million years old! Their various colours are produced by a variety of minerals deposited by water inside the tree trunks while they were decaying covered by river sediment.
