Grand Canyon is probably the most grandiose natural sight in US. It is a huge gorge cut into the high-lying Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona by the Colorado River over millions of years. The total length of Grand Canyon is about 446 kms, its depth is well over 1000 m, at certain points reaching 1600 m, while its width varies between less than 1 km to 24 kms. At the bottom of the Canyon, some of the exposed rocks are more than 2 billion years old. As the picture shows, the Colorado runs so deep below that it is practically invisible from the edge of the Canyon. Tourists are advised to wait for the sunset, because the softer sunlight exposes the beautiful colors and shadows of the Canyon.
