The Golden Gate Bridge, with its  2740 m length, was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1937. It was named after the "Golden Gate", the mouth of San Francisco Bay, which the bridge crosses. The bridge became one of the most famous landmarks of San Francisco and the entire US.
