The Romans built their first fort on the site over 2000 years ago. They were followed many centuries later by the Normans and the medieval lords. It was the Butes, last of the great families to occupy Cardiff castle who employed William Burges in the 19th c. to restore the castle and to enhance it with the creations of his genius, adding the exquisite detail, craftmanship and colour.
