The Norman Keep was built in the early 12th c. by Robert Consul. It was the prison for eight years (1126-1134) of Duke Robert of Normandy, the eldest son of William the Conqueror. The artificial motte (or mound) on which the keep is built is 10.7 m high with a summit of 33 m diameter.
