The original suspension bridge (Welsh: Pont Hafren) was inaugurated on September 8, 1966, The Severn Bridge (above) is in fact two bridges. The main section spans the Severn Estuary (length: 988 m), whilst the second smaller section spans the River Wye (length: 408 m). The newer cable-stayed bridge (Welsh: Ail Groesfan Hafren; length: 5128 m) a few miles to the south, was inaugurated on June 5, 1996.
