It was built by the Romans in the 2nd c., and was discovered and unearthed in 1926. The Roman town built for an elite legion of ~5000 included

barracks, a bath-house, a hospital and the above shown amphitheatre (6000 seats). Similar accommodations were ensured for the Roman soldiers in 2 other towns: York and Chester. When the Romans pulled back their troops from Britain (380-410) the Celts did not move into the fancy villas, the soldiers' barracks, the forts, etc. One of the exceptions was the legendary figure of King Arthur. Who is said to have set up his court, here in the Caerleon Roman amphitheatre (Camelot is not mentioned in the early Arthurian traditions.).
